The Lyme-disease infection rate is growing. So is the battle over how to treat it.

Kaleigh Ahern was twelve years old when a tick bit her. She noticed it “perched” on her shoulder when she was taking a shower one morning. “I thought it was your average, everyday bug,” Ahern told me recently. But, when she tried to brush it off, the tick wouldn’t budge. “The legs wiggled but it was embedded in my skin. I freaked out and started screaming.” Kaleigh’s mother, Holly Ahern, came running and removed it. “I took the kid and the tick to the doctor,” she said. “I told him, Here...

They're disgusting little creatures. The mere thought of one crawling up your leg, and latching onto you while feasting on your blood for a meal is enough to send you running to the psychiatrist, let alone the doctor. As if the violation of your personal space by a blood swapping arachnid is not enough, they have the potential to deposit the spirochete that causes Lyme disease, A potentially life altering long-term infection.

ACT FAST

If you can save the tick and bring it to your doctor, it can be analyzed to determine if it carries the spirochete that causes Lyme Disease. If...

This Sunday, June 21, we will be celebrating Father's Day and enjoying some quality time with the men in our lives. In honor of the holiday, The Petteruti Family spent last weekend outside at Wheeler State Beach playing football and running in the sand. "One of the great joys of fatherhood is watching your children surpass you. Even at my antiaging best, at 56 I could barely keep up with these 13-year-olds," Dr. Petteruti.

How will you be spending your Father's Day? Share your plans with us on...

Bringing Moderation to the Marathon!

Happy Patriots' Day!

On the day when tens of thousands ran the Boston Marathon, my thoughts turn to the impact of exercise on our longevity and our health in general.

Being Americans, we naturally think that if a little is good, more is better. This seems to be the prevailing wisdom regarding exercise. Why exercise when you can "shred?"  Why should you pursue moderate exercise when you should "go hard, or go home?"  It turns out that the ancient Greek axiom of moderation in everything may hold true for exercise as well.

With the coming of spring our thoughts turn to the pleasures of summer. Unfortunately, with the greening of the landscape comes  a horde of Ticks ready to make us miserable.

Here are some facts worth knowing about regarding tick-borne disease.

1.  Lyme should be considered in any "flu like" illness that occurs in the spring or summer. Fever, chills and headache should be considered possibly Lyme in origin

2. Only one half of Lyme disease cases have a history of a tick being removed.  This is because the disease can be...

We Will Defeat Evil by Being Boston Strong Together!

Boston Strong, marathon, Boston Marathon Posted by: GinaS

I remember watching my first Boston Marathon. It was 1980. I was a student at Tufts University. I couldn't understand what all the fuss was about a marathon. Watching a bunch of skinny dudes with numbers on their tank tops jogging by didn't seem like a bunch of fun, but my friends were Bostonians and insisted it was an experience not to be missed.

It was a perfect New England spring day. Deep blue sky spotted with fluffy clouds. A light breeze.  I couldn't believe the crowd. Eight deep in some sections. Everybody was smiling, talking to each other. Every now...
